The outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 led to a significant expansion of Australia's armoured force. The first Australian tanks were a small number of British medium and light tanks which were operated mainly for training purposes during the 1920s and 1930s. The Australian Army's tanks have seen combat during the Second World War and the Vietnam War, where they proved successful despite some of the designs employed being considered obsolete. ![]() Throughout this period the Army has primarily been a light infantry force, with its tanks mainly being used in the direct support role. ![]() Includes a free decal sheet. The Australian Army has used tanks from after the First World War, through the interwar period, the Second World War, the Cold War and to the present day. With emphasis on the key features of each machine, including their variations, artwork, markings, insignia and modifications, customising and creating a model could not be easier. Photosniper is a classic series of highly illustrated photo books on the best machines of war, creating, with numerous images, a close-up, walk-around view for each aircraft or vehicle. The heavy armour came at the price of reduced mobility, chiefly due to engine power limitations, which was perhaps the Chieftain's main drawback. The British had learned during the war that their tanks often lacked sufficient protection and firepower compared to those fielded by the enemy, and that this had led to high casualty levels when faced with the superior German tanks in World War II.Ĭhieftain was designed to be as well protected as possible and to be equipped with a powerful 120 mm rifled gun.
